This is one of the most important things i have ever linked.
Plastic bags are evil.
It disgusts and repulses me to see people at the store putting one or two things in a platic bag. Especially when they have cool stuff such pockets and thumbs to hold things. I always request no bag when i go to the store. I can purchase 3 things at the grocery, and when i tell the clerk i dont wanna bag, its like ive been semt by al queda on a suicide mission. I can sense the clerk is seeing their life pass before them, so i tell em im just doing my part to safe artificial christmas trees. They always relax and smile then. I just laugh it off too... Even if it is wrong that im made to feel like a criminal, merely for stuffing 10 things I bought in MY pockets. I love it when they wanna put a sticker on everything i bought, to show i paid for it, like someone in security is actually paying attention.

Anyway back to the story...

The plastic bag is an icon of convenience culture, by some estimates the single most ubiquitous consumer item on Earth, numbering in the trillions. They're made from petroleum or natural gas with all the attendant environmental impacts of harvesting fossil fuels. One recent study found that the inks and colorants used on some bags contain lead, a toxin. Every year, Americans throw away some 100 billion plastic bags after they've been used to transport a prescription home from the drugstore or a quart of milk from the grocery store. It's equivalent to dumping nearly 12 million barrels of oil.

Only 1 percent of plastic bags are recycled worldwide -- about 2 percent in the U.S. -- and the rest, when discarded, can persist for centuries. They can spend eternity in landfills, but that's not always the case. "They're so aerodynamic that even when they're properly disposed of in a trash can they can still blow away and become litter," says Mark Murray, executive director of Californians Against Waste. It's as litter that plastic bags have the most baleful effect. And we're not talking about your everyday eyesore. Once aloft, stray bags cartwheel down city streets, alight in trees, billow from fences like flags, clog storm drains, wash into rivers and bays and even end up in the ocean, washed out to sea. Bits of plastic bags have been found in the nests of albatrosses in the remote Midway Islands. Floating bags can look all too much like tasty jellyfish to hungry marine critters. According to the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, more than a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die every year from eating or getting entangled in plastic. The conservation group estimates that 50 percent of all marine litter is some form of plastic. There are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. In the Northern Pacific Gyre, a great vortex of ocean currents, there's now a swirling mass of plastic trash about 1,000 miles off the coast of California, which spans an area that's twice the size of Texas, including fragments of plastic bags. There's six times as much plastic as biomass, including plankton and jellyfish, in the gyre. "It's an endless stream of incessant plastic particles everywhere you look," says Dr. Marcus Eriksen, director of education and research for the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, which studies plastics in the marine environment. "Fifty or 60 years ago, there was no plastic out there."

Ive been slacking on the posting.
Went to chicago last weeked, saw a few panic shows, kicked it with agent gorpy, the spaceman, and some other members of team zonk! Wassup!!! Its awesome to see people at a show you havent seen in years. Great shows, the chicago theater is awesome. Saw Jb throw out the 1st pitch at the cubs game. Flubs vs asstros, it was sad they both couldnt lose. I decided to root for the home team, and they won. We were all hoping Jb would sing 'Take me out to the ballgame', but he didnt. Immediately after some tool sung it, there was a mass exodus of tie dye headed up the stairs and for the doors of the friendly confines.

Agent cleo cloe elco Beans even made the trip up north to see her buddy, Agent Timber. The 2 were pups together, and hadnt had the chance to sniff each others butts in about 5 years. They were pretty stoked to see each other.

Got a new drive train for the Fiddy. A 1957 235 motor, transmission, driveshaft, and the rearend, complete with the brakes. Cleaned it up yesterday and got the engine on a stand. Slowly but surely im making some progress on my new sled.

Thats it, ill add some pics... Maybe.

I also managed to hit a place ive never been on route 66, Atlanta... Illinois.
Since i added the pics, how about one of Cleo kickin it under a giant hot dog tout from the 60s. Ive got a shots of cleo under a few different version of these from around the country... Ill try to find and upload em.

Digging into an engine...

For the 1st time.
After filling the cylinders of the original 216 engine with penetrating stew and waiting, and waiting, and waiting, i had enough. I pulled the head off the fidy this morning, and found out why it wouldnt turn over...

Still cant quite figure out how so much water got in the cylinders, the gaskets look good. Guess im gonna get to put a 235 in after all. This is the original engine, so i hope to rebuild her someday. For now, ill likely put in an upgraded engine, a 235, which is just a better, more reliable version of the 216. Still a straight 6 engine, that is still somewhat period correct. Its also easyier to soup up.

Long before Cap'n Crunch's sugary yellow barrels floated in cereal bowls across the land, Pamela Low got a hint of what was to come while visiting her grandparents.
"Grandma would make this concoction with rice and the sauce that she had; it was a combination of brown sugar and butter," Ms. Low's brother William of Westerville, Ohio, said with a chuckle. "It tasted good, obviously. They'd put it over the rice and eat it as a kind of a treat on Sundays..."

Three decades later, Ms. Low drew on the memory of her grandmother's delicacy to create the taste that made Cap'n Crunch a popular breakfast cereal. She died of a lung ailment Friday in New London Hospital, not far from her home on the shore of Messer Pond in New Hampshire. Ms. Low was 79 and had worked in Boston for more than 30 years at the Arthur D. Little consulting firm.

Swelled by downpours out West, the Missouri River will rise quickly this week and may get within a few feet of the historic flood crests of 1993.
The river fell Monday at St. Charles, but is expected to begin rising today. The National Weather Service projects it to pass flood stage there on Thursday and top out next Monday as high as 36.8 feet on the gauge -- nearly 12 feet over flood and not quite three feet short of the record.

So how about a quick recap.

I got a new job.

Went to a cool graduation party in Tower Grove Park, congrats Agent Wamble! Saw some people there i hadnt seen for a bit. Set up a basket for disk golf, drank beer, and just enjoyed the park. TG park has made quite a comeback.

I inherited an E-bike.... Yes, an electric bike. Im addicted. The thing is so cool. I want a faster one. I call it my hippie bike, but it looks more like Pee Wee Hermans. Its got pedals and a motor, so its still like riding a bike, all be it a 75 pound bike full of lead.

Cobi Jones has announced he will retire at the end of the 2007 season.
When i was a kid playing soccer, Cobi Jones was the player i looked up to, and wanted to be.
An outstading player and person, who started his career as a walk on for the top program UCLA, then led them to a national championship 2 years later.
Cobi would then go on to make the national team, playing in 3 world cups. Going on to become Team Usas most capped player, and assist leader in between.
After a stint w/ coventry in the premiershiop, and some time in brazil, he was the 2nd player chosen by the smelLA Galaxy when the league was created. He has gone on to win 2 mls cups, a CONCACAF Champions' Cup, a 2 U.S. Open Cups in 12 years with the green and yellow. Getting national team players to join the brand new MLS was needed to give the league enough credentials to find investors, and Cobi heeded the call.

Cobi Jones is American soccer, and i would like to say thanks for all hes done, and will do. I cant wait to see cobi and becks on the same field, in the same uniform, and im sure that this season wont be the last we hear from Cobi Jones.

I found a copy of Secrets of the Federal Reserve one christmas @ a big ole bookstore in st petersberg, fl. for 5 bucks. It was quite the read, all about the secret meetings between the top/richest/most powerful financiers in the country on jekyll island in 1913. Many names im sure youve heard before. Meetings that led to the creation of the federal reserve, which controls the money supply and interest rates. The book also goes into how theyve used it for their profit, and to control the world. All that good stuff.
A roommate of mine in collage borrowed it, and never returned it. Ive seen copies of it on ebay for a few hundred bucks.
Anyway, i just found and online copy of it, so if your interested in one persons view of how the money of america, and the economies of the world are controlled...

Wow... Its been awhile, i do appologize to my faithfull readers.

Widespread Panic show last sunday, great show, amazing show, they tore the roof off, great lot, good people.
Heres the set list from EC.
Keane on guitar and pedal was a nice addition, George was on fire, everyone was having a good time, the band, the fans, the security. The best George show ive seen. He really picked it up the last year, ill admit i thought it was over when he took lead. I had trouble with his sound, especially on the old songs, but i really liked the new stuff, so that made up for it. Having Matt Keane, and at times Sam Holt stepping in to make up the slack on the older songs this tour was a great addition. The band really seemed to be playing together. Listen for yourself

The next night in Louisville, no George... He left the band. WTF!!!
Keane and Sam Holt played the show, they also played the next show as well. Rumors flew, the band announced that George was leaving, then then next day announced Jimmy Herring was the new lead guitar player for Widespead Panic. The hot rumor is that the band was going to replace George with Herring fall tour, he got wind of it and split... Keane and Holt had been insurance all tour in case this happened. The rumor mill is still out of control, i post somthing when i know more.
After listening to the streams of the 2 shows, listen to 8-1-06, with keane and holt i liked it. It really sounded good, and made me realize how much i had grown accustom to Georges sound. I dont wanna take anything away from George McConnell, and all he has done for the band and the fans the last 4 years...

That said, i think this might turn out for the best, if they were keeping Keane and Holt. It was nice to hear more of Mikeys sound back in the band. I really dont know what to expect from Herring cept he is a hired gun, he is an amazing guitar player. I just dont want panic to turn into a band just touring on their old stuff, i dont want a revolving door at the lead guitar every tour, the magic of Panic is how they play together. I just hope they can be a band, and keep moning forward.

Adventure Route 66... Text Here!!!

This is my local, 3 hour vacation down Route 66. Not many people think about inner city St Louis when the topic of conversation drifts towards the mother road. Not all of Route 66 is 2 lanes weaving through red rocks or small hotels left in the dust of the interstate. Parts of it are depressed inner city... Trying to make a comeback.
The pictures are in order from the beginning of the Manchester Road Route 66 alignment for about 10 miles or so to where it meets the 270 beltway. If you click on the pictures you will be taken to my flickr page. There are more photos, you can enlarge em, and there are more descriptions as well.

What better way to start an adventure then with 3 cheeseburgers without pickles, an onion ring, and an ice cold water from this White Castle.

My favorite building on the strip.

This Area is called Forest Park Southeast. Its making a comeback. As little as 3 years ago this area was in much worse shape then it is now. As with much of St Louis there have been many demolitions in the area, especially south of Manchester/Route 66. An investment group has been buying up property and they just petitioned for a bunch of demolitions, most of them, a believe 22 were approved. Without any public input of course. Here they are. Im all for redevelopment, but not all those buildings are beyond hope, and once they are gone, the history can never be replaced.

There had been something missing so far on this journey down the Mother Road... The railroad. Ive been on most of Route 66, and the rails are always nearby. It felt good to have them around again.

I cannot describe to you the vastness of this empty space. There is more behind the shot, much less what you cant see fading off in the distance. Most of it was vacant. My 1st thought was what did they destroy to build it... It used to be a steel mill, so maybe, just maybe its better off. Across the street stood the building in the next picture. A nice old bricky getting the rehab as it looks out across a vacant strip mall.

This marker separates the city from the county. There is a KSHE 95 Sweetmeat sticker in the middle of the O in St Louis, classic.

This is a shot of downtown Maplewood. A nice little main street oasis in the middle of the big city and its burbs. This is a trait the gives St Louis its character. While this area is getting toward the more upscale part of St Louis County, the entire city is made up of small islands of "inhabited strips" that rise up through a sea of abandonment and slums. Though this is changing as rehabs and revitalization take place all over town.

I love the contrast of these 2 buildings. Many of he same elements in both.

Getting into the nicer part of town. There is a porsche dealership in my side view mirror.

What better way to end this trip then with a drive past a mall. Its not only 4 lane interstate hiways that put many a small local on Route 66 out of business. The rise of malls and suburbia played a hand in their demise as well.

Take one last look west down the Main Street of America. I hope you enjoyed this photo tour of a section of Route 66 most people dont even think about.

Yeah, i know Team USA lost, but everyone is being way to hard on them. They were playing the supposed #2 team in the world. They were not supposed to win. Granted, they played horrible in the offensive zone, but the team was not completely outplayed and dominated as some have written. 2 mistakes led to the 1st 2 Czech goals. World class teams take advantage of mistakes. 2 inches right and Renya would of tied the game.
Anyway, i dont wanna dwell. Team USA absolutely must beat Italy this saturday @ 1:30.
I think ecuador is the sleeper of the World Cup. They play Costa Rica manana, which should be just another confidence builder. I cant wait till they play Germany on the 20th.

The greatest tournament in the world has started today. The World Cup, taking place in Germany this time around. 32 teams... 64 games... Whos gonna be the best the world?
Brazil is the favorite, and the Yanks, ranked #5 are in one of the toughest groups in the tournament. To top it off the winner of Group E will likely draw Brazil for their next game. Team USA really needs to beat the Czechs who are ranked #2, in game 1 on june 12th.
Tune in monday night, cheer for the USA... This is gonna be our tourny!!!

I was watching Washington the Warrior on the History Channel the other night. It was good, check it out.
Anyway... There was a part about Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolf Gerhard August von Steuben. He was a very experienced Prussian military dude who needed a job. The fight of the day was the American Revolution so he hooked up with Ben Franklin in Paris. Knowing that someone with his knowledge was a rare find, and much needed, Franklin hired him and sent him off to Boston.
Baron von Stueben ended up being, in essence, the the 1st drill sergant for the Amercian Military, later he wrote the book on it, really.
Long story short...
He took a brave ragtag group of soldiers that could shoot, and taught them how to be an Army. He yelled and cursed them in german and french, and when that wouldnt work he would have his translator curse them in english for him. The man taught them how to march, how to set up camp, how to flank, how to reload fast. All of the typical military techniques of the day. Techniques that are very important when you are fighting the worlds best military, Britian.
Baron von Steuben played a very improtant role in the birth of America. From training troops to commanding a division at Yorktown. He helped demobilize the army after the war and prepare defense plans for a new nation. He was discharged with honor and eventually became an American citizen.
